End joining

Ku heterodimer (XRCC6 / XRCC5)

Ring-shaped Ku70–Ku80 heterodimer with high affinity for DNA ends. It is abundant, which makes it likely to be the first protein to bind a broken end; it shields the ends, and extensive resection is prevented by Ku. [1][2]
